The Poetry Challenge – Week 1 – The Top Three

Week 1 – Smiling Thoughts
The Top Three

The following three poems are the ones that I found the best for the heading “Smiling Thoughts” out of all the submissions (It was so hard to pick the top three, I seriously sat there for hours deciding, such quality for the first week of the contest!). The poems are labelled “A, B, C,” just comment the letter of the relevant poem that you find the best. Voting will close 12.00PM on Monday!

A: By  abbynicks

She stares at her relection
And what she sees is true:
She’s fishbelly pale and fat
Her eyes are grey and cool

Her hair is constantly frizzing
Her temper’s lightning-quick
Boys have never liked her
They say she makes them sick

He stares at her reflection
And what he says is true:
“Your body’s nice and curvy
Your skin is like the moon

“Your eyes are like a storm
Before the sky is filled with rain
Your hair is a thing of glory
Wild and completely untamed

“Your temper may be deadly quick
But I know your secret well
You’re kind and sweet and full of love
I swear I’ll never tell

“Those boys were foolish ne’er-do-wells
And I’m sorry they broke your heart
But I love you now and always will
And have right from the start.”

She smiles at their reflection
And this she knows is true:
This boy is kind and honest
So she says, “I love you too.”

B: By Bianca

As I looked outside the half open window at school,

The clear sky started to form dark and gloomy clouds,

The breeze slowly crept in sweeping the handouts away,

I didn’t pick them up; I just left them on the ground lifeless,

I was to immersed in the storm that was brewing in my view,

The bell rang catching me off guard, scaring me half to death,

The end of the day had arrived and the thunder started to rumble,

But the rain never poured at school like it was supposed to,

When I arrived home and walked in the door the rain pelted down,

I couldn’t help but laugh and smile at the irony of it all,

I put my bag down, took my shoes and socks off and walked outside,

I laid on the green grass and watched the lightning beam,

Listened to the thunder roar and heard the angry wind howl,

This was the way life was supposed to be, happy and carefree,

With smiling thoughts.

C: By takudzwadonald

She helplessly lay on the bed, half-asleep
As she heard faint voices behind the beep-beep
This may well be my death-bed she assumes
But she can’t tell anybody as she can barely speak
The doctors don’t tell her, but they know her chances are meek
They have nobody to tell, she’s been here alone for a week!
Her body’s in unbearable pain yet her mind reminisces
Of all the days she’d party alone and leave as somebody’s Missus
The bands, drugs, sex and telling after all her kisses
The peddlers she called friends and the “Get Rich” wishes!
For a moment she cares not for the agony she’s in,
She ignores the excruciating pain from the broken skin
And shoddy stitches…
She remembers the people she last saw before she overdosed, as friends and not witches!
The pump still runs but suddenly she doesn’t breathe
And there goes everything, her life flashes to the one long beep!
And though she was a coke addict, and her life amounted to nought…
At least she died high and happy, with smiling thoughts!

These are the final three, so please all add the letter of your favourite poem in the comment section below, remember on Monday the voting closes.
