Should I?

Should I?

Will that break happen,
Should I keep on going,
No one can see the future,
So there’s no way of knowing.

Should I keep on trying,
Should I just give up,
Should I put down my pen,
And say enough is enough.

Should I give up on dreams,
Leave them all behind,
Or just keep working,
Hoping I get signed.

Is my work any good,
Or are people just being polite,
I just can’t stop thinking,
Its keeping me up at night.

I’m not good at much,
But I think I’m good at this,
I’m either by the sun,
Or lost in the mist.

Questions I keep asking,
The answer is still waiting,
Should I just give up,
It’s a decision ill be making.

  1. Perfect. I tried to think of a better way to praise this, but that’s just it. It’s perfect. I just hope one day, I’ll be able to rhyme just like that. :P I love song-writing and poems too so it’s great to see other people out there like me, better than me, than I can learn from!

  2. Hey Corey,

Just spent some time in your space here. Your blog has truly become your voice and a venue to share your talents with the world. Keep it up. Stay the course. Magical things can happen. Thanks for subscribing to my blog Corey. I really appreciate it. We clearly both love words. Best of luck in 2012, Margie

  3. I thought this was really thought provoking and heart wrenching. We all wonder if we should keep going, you put it beautifully. I’m all for keep going. The only road, is the one ahead. Seize your talent!

  4. :) It was good to read this because I’ve been going through the same thoughts – both in my career and in my writing. I think all writers are big self doubters but I hear in this rhyme a lot of what I think. No matter what others say i think everything I write is crap but I am going to do it anyway because it is important to me and at the same time, this might actually be my thing. Thank you!

By your stats, you are gaining an audience. That is an accomplishment!
    never give up your gift.

  6. Thomas Davis says:

Keep writing. As I tell students, well, you can keep going to school and someday end up somewhere better even if it takes awhile, or you can drop out and be where you were before you decided you’d better get in school or waste your life in the first place. A hatful of poems is better than an empty hat without a head to put into it.

  7. ClownRhymes, thank you for liking my poem — through this I have now discovered your work. Lovely poems, continue penning, it reveals a sensitive soul in you. keep in touch! Cheers.

I like your pen, the way you express yourself and your thoughts.
You`re good in what you do!

  11. Tomekha says:

Put down your pen!? – don’t even think of it – you have something beautiful here, don’t let go. Keep on going.

  12. kenziekay says:

I completely agree with the comment above mine – don’t put your pen down! Your poetry is very well-written! Discouragement can be a normal feeling for writers of all kinds; I’ve felt it many, many times and considered giving writing up. I actually tried to because I put so much into it and wasn’t sure if it would ever go anywhere. I eventually realized that I couldn’t because I loved it too much and just kept pushing onward. And you’ve got a great talent here, don’t give up! Don’t leave those dreams of yours behind!

(Btw, thanks for checking out my blog! :-) )

  14. joanna says:

This was really wonderful! It absolutely captures the frustration and uncertainty that I think all writers (well, at least me) face on a daily basis.
Friends and family say that they love your stuff, but do they really like it or are they just being nice to you, afraid that the truth will hurt too much because CLEARLY you’re far too fragile to handle what they REALLY think, so you just PRAY for SOMEone to critique your writing but dread it at the same time.
    *whew*
    Sorry.
    I love your writing. :o )

That’s the main reason I wrote this because I know a lot or aspiring writers would relate to it :)
I’m glad you enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to seeing more from your blog!

  15. Stranger says:

Something I can relate to, totally awesome. Keep it up! :) and by the way thanks for following my blog. :)

  16. No way! Don’t give up :-)

  17. This is my first visit to your blog, and I’ve only had time to read this entry (got to go back out to work in a minute).

Don’t give up. You have a talent, my friend. I’m almost fifty years old and still trying to make it as a writer. If I could give a young person one bit of advice; follow your dreams.

As long as you’re writing there’s a chance. Give up, and there’ll be no chance of making it. :-) It’s as easy to be a success as it is to be a failure. It’s just a matter of luck and timing.

Failure isn’t about not making it. It’s about giving up trying. Every time you have a setback try again.

  18. ramaink says:

Gosh, whatever you do, do NOT give up and stay true to your voice because it has some really cool and fabulous things to say.
And stick to your spontaneity because that is when its coming straight from the heart.
Looking forward to reading more of your heartfelt poems/songs/rhymes/raps. :)
And thank you for visiting my blog!

  19. cnwood says:

Should I? definitely expresses what many writers feel when sitting alone, writing their hearts out, trying to make the words say exactly what they mean. I think of all those hours writing at my computer as a trial by fire, making me stronger, better; a form of discipline that keeps me focused and striving for personal perfection in my work. Maybe one day you’ll write a poem entitled, Can’t Stop, a kind of flipside to the Should I? Because any writer who’s ever experience that incredible high and sense of satisfaction after a good day of writing understands the need to keep pushing limitations beyond imagination.

Appreciate your interest in my novel and look forward to reading more of your poems.

    • clownponders says:

Im glad you could relate to it! I can see my own skills developing day after day thats why i dont think i will ever give it up :)
I like your “cant stop” idea i shall definatly create one within the next few weeks!!
I look forward to seeing more from your blog, thanks for commenting :)

  21. danroberson says:

Should I stop talking because I said the wrong things?
Should I quit singing because I don’t remember the right notes?
Should I quit breathing because sometimes it’s stuffy?
I talk to communicate. I sing because I’m happy.
I breathe because I live. I write to express why I’m happy, and why I want to breathe. I write because it frees my spirit and lets me go where I could not go.
You have talent. It’s not fully developed yet, but no one is ever truly finished with their development. Writing is a life-long journey, going where no one has gone before. It’s a time to explore the world, others, and yourself. It’s a talent that grows or stagnates, depending if it is used or not. Keep writing. Write for yourself. Others will find you.

  22. artfulhelix says:

There is a lot I could say, but it has all bin said! You are amazing! I am new when it comes to writing a novel, but I have written poetry for a long time. I think every artist no mater what medium they are in doubts them selves all the time, I know I do.
Let me share a little story from high school, 9Th grade in fact.
In my literacy class we where asked to write a poem about any thing we wished. being only a couple years since Columbine happened I chose that subject. I decided to do something different and put my self in the position of the shooter, being a person who throughout school was teased and put down for being different and overweight. It was so moving my teacher not only gave me an A, but pulled me aside and asked me if I was planing to shoot up the school. I found this so funny I actually laughed at my teacher.
Never give up on what you love no mater what obstacle may come your way!
Thank you for stopping by my page! I can’t wait to read more!!

  25. perfect!!!!!! is the only word for this poem!!!! It’s so beautifully written!!! ….you are awesome …….. loved loved loved it!!!! :)

  26. tetralogia says:

I’m thinking of posting in audio soon, it’s not that hard to do via the Media link in the Dashboard. Will bring a whole new dimension to you poetry. You can speak it yourself or have someone else do it. Good stuff, K

  27. Wow…I think most people have been there at one point or another. To give up, or to carry on in the journey? I’d vote for progressing forward. Never hurts to do other things while you work hard towards, and wait for, your break, but if you give up then you never know if it would have ever come your way.

    • clownponders says:

Yes from the feedback I have had there seems to be many people who have had these thoughts. I won’t give up, I have so many ideas in my head it would drive me insane if I didn’t put the pen to paper :)

  28. Olive Tree says:

I haven’t been doing blog hopping and visiting in a long time and it’s been a while since the last time I stopped by here. This is a great poem, Corey. I’m going to sound like a broken record here, following the comments above me. Don’t give up if it is your dream, if it is something that you enjoy and love doing. The thing is, even if you try to give up, it will pull you back to it again if it is something that you truly love to do. So, don’t give up. Do it for the love of doing it, not for the feedback or recognition. Great job on this poem.

  29. Really enjoyed this. Definitely keep going.

  30. snipewife says:

Keep it up. Thank you for stopping by my blog and following me. I have to laugh because I have a deep seated fear of clowns though. :) DH was intrigued by your awareness poetry and thought it was cool.

  31. Rana Armoush says:

That break is about to happen,
You should never stop, keep on going,
some people can predict your future,
from the talented path you’re now following.

Yes you Should keep on trying,
And never think of give up,
Nourish the love story you have with that pen,
Believe thee this love is never a bluff!

Never give up on those dreams,
    Nor Leave them all behind,
    just keep working,& working
One Day you will get signed.

Your poetry is so touching & good,
Believe me no one is ever that polite,
    You are good at this,
    Whether by the sun,
    Or lost in the mist.

    You Should never give up,
that’s the decision you should be making.

  32. Stephanie says:

Love it! You keep your rhythm even when there is no rhyme. You definitely have an ear for it. You definitely have a talent. Don’t stop!

  33. Write. You don’t have a choice. If you don’t pick up the pen, you’ll just hear it in your head. This is your truth
    “I’m not good at much,
But I think I’m good at this,
    I’m either by the sun,
    Or lost in the mist.”
That has impact. And the sun and mist – solid and something people can feel. Good post. Just write.

  34. Monica Enderle Pierce says:

Never doubt that your words and thoughts have value, and if they have brought change to even one person then they have proven that worth. Whether we’re struggling or succeeding, we all have doubts. Just remember to be your own biggest fan. Put self-criticism aside because there will always be plenty of people lining up to handle that for you.
And thanks for stopping by and following my blog.

  48. Keep writing because you love it. If you get published, it’s icing on the cake. You’re doing great!

  49. Wow, this is how I feel today. I’ve been working on the rewrites of a novel for two months now and am starting to feel that sense of burn out and self doubt. Of course, no one has said, “Hey, this stinks.” However, that is what my inner critic keeps chanting this morning…. I think a break is in order before I go insane, or worse, shred it to pieces.

The best kind of writing is simple yet heartfelt, and you absolutely nail it. I especially love your ‘freestyle’ work. As all writers know sometimes words have to be carefully selected, but you waste none. I truly hope you get signed!

shoulda, woulda, could.. oh the ponders

  60. This is the correct Should I? ClownRhymes diary for anyone who wants to attempt out out nearly this substance. You remark so much its near effortful to discourse with you (not that I rattling would want…HaHa). You definitely put a new spin on a theme thats been handwritten nigh for eld. Fastidious personalty, but high!
