The Poetry Challenge – Week 1 – The Top Three

Week 1 – Smiling Thoughts
The Top Three

The following three poems are the ones that I found the best for the heading “Smiling Thoughts” out of all the submissions (It was so hard to pick the top three, I seriously sat there for hours deciding, such quality for the first week of the contest!). The poems are labelled “A, B, C,” just comment the letter of the relevant poem that you find the best. Voting will close 12.00PM on Monday!

A: By  abbynicks

She stares at her relection
And what she sees is true:
She’s fishbelly pale and fat
Her eyes are grey and cool

Her hair is constantly frizzing
Her temper’s lightning-quick
Boys have never liked her
They say she makes them sick

He stares at her reflection
And what he says is true:
“Your body’s nice and curvy
Your skin is like the moon

“Your eyes are like a storm
Before the sky is filled with rain
Your hair is a thing of glory
Wild and completely untamed

“Your temper may be deadly quick
But I know your secret well
You’re kind and sweet and full of love
I swear I’ll never tell

“Those boys were foolish ne’er-do-wells
And I’m sorry they broke your heart
But I love you now and always will
And have right from the start.”

She smiles at their reflection
And this she knows is true:
This boy is kind and honest
So she says, “I love you too.”

B: By Bianca

As I looked outside the half open window at school,

The clear sky started to form dark and gloomy clouds,

The breeze slowly crept in sweeping the handouts away,

I didn’t pick them up; I just left them on the ground lifeless,

I was to immersed in the storm that was brewing in my view,

The bell rang catching me off guard, scaring me half to death,

The end of the day had arrived and the thunder started to rumble,

But the rain never poured at school like it was supposed to,

When I arrived home and walked in the door the rain pelted down,

I couldn’t help but laugh and smile at the irony of it all,

I put my bag down, took my shoes and socks off and walked outside,

I laid on the green grass and watched the lightning beam,

Listened to the thunder roar and heard the angry wind howl,

This was the way life was supposed to be, happy and carefree,

With smiling thoughts.

C: By takudzwadonald

She helplessly lay on the bed, half-asleep
As she heard faint voices behind the beep-beep
This may well be my death-bed she assumes
But she can’t tell anybody as she can barely speak
The doctors don’t tell her, but they know her chances are meek
They have nobody to tell, she’s been here alone for a week!
Her body’s in unbearable pain yet her mind reminisces
Of all the days she’d party alone and leave as somebody’s Missus
The bands, drugs, sex and telling after all her kisses
The peddlers she called friends and the “Get Rich” wishes!
For a moment she cares not for the agony she’s in,
She ignores the excruciating pain from the broken skin
And shoddy stitches…
She remembers the people she last saw before she overdosed, as friends and not witches!
The pump still runs but suddenly she doesn’t breathe
And there goes everything, her life flashes to the one long beep!
And though she was a coke addict, and her life amounted to nought…
At least she died high and happy, with smiling thoughts!

These are the final three, so please all add the letter of your favourite poem in the comment section below, remember on Monday the voting closes.

Smiling thoughts

When life gets you down,
When life gets too tough,
Just think of the good times,
All the happy stuff,
The days when you were younger,
Fearless and free,
When you could dress like anybody,
that you wanted to be,
Drawing on your bedroom walls,
instead of on paper,
Without caring about,
The trouble you were in later,
Being in your bedroom,
For hours on end,
Playing game after game,
With your imaginary friend,
Frustrating your parents,
Thinking it was funny,
“why did you swallow your cash?”
“You said it was lunch money!”
The times with no responsibility,
When you could do whatever you please,
From riding your bike,
To swinging from tree’s,
So when adulthood gets hard,
Just think back at the past,
Because the memories will make you smile,
And they will always last.

Should I?

Should I?

Will that break happen,
Should I keep on going,
No one can see the future,
So there’s no way of knowing.

Should I keep on trying,
Should I just give up,
Should I put down my pen,
And say enough is enough.

Should I give up on dreams,
Leave them all behind,
Or just keep working,
Hoping I get signed.

Is my work any good,
Or are people just being polite,
I just can’t stop thinking,
Its keeping me up at night.

I’m not good at much,
But I think I’m good at this,
I’m either by the sun,
Or lost in the mist.

Questions I keep asking,
The answer is still waiting,
Should I just give up,
It’s a decision ill be making.

A Poem By Corey Booth – 08/01/12 :)

Not Yet Decided On A Title!

Background

This is the first draft of the song I’ve written. There is no chorus yet at the moment, still deciding on a few different ones so here’s the rest of it!
Hoping for feedback, how I can improve, what is good and what is bad, thanks for the help all!

Verse 1

Escaped from the pit, no longer stranded,
A fresh new start, no longer branded,
On my own, I did it single-handed,
I’ve left my past now they can’t stand it.
I’m stronger now, a brand new man,
Only now my life has began,
Taking control just like I planned,
And I won’t let it get out of hand.
I was at a low,
Now I’m at a high,
Reaching for the stars,
I’m already in the sky,
Forgetting all the scars,
Telling them goodbye,
This moment is for me,
No more tears will I cry,
The haters can hate,
I think I know why,
Maybe they’re jealous,
Of the words I supply,
Stick them on a beat,
And with the flow I apply,
They can’t take the heat,
So they curl up and fry!

Verse 2

I was at a left, now I’m all right,
Smashed through the darkness, like a beam of light,
I never knew, success could be in sight,
It’s finally occurred to me that it just might.
Its going to be hard, the hill is steep,
But I’ll get there if I dig deep,
In my dreams ill take that leap,
Cause without dreams there will just be sleep,
But I’m not sleeping,
I’m feeling sublime,
And line after line,
I continue to rhyme,
Spitting on a beat,
Just flowing in time,
It’s a form of art,
A lyrical design,
My confidence is up,
I’m nearly in my prime,
Conquered a mountain,
That I had to climb,
Standing at its peak,
I’m at cloud nine,
Feeling calm and successful,
Like an organised crime!

Verse 3

My advice to you, just keep your concentration,
Focus on your goals, use that as inspiration,
Battle bit by bit, through every complication,
Because in the end you will find salvation.
It might be tough, it might be hard,
You will get hit, you will get scarred,
So put on your armour, be on guard,
This is life and you’re in its yard,
The yard might be his,
But you can still be free,
Smash out of hell,
Just like me,
The dark has gone,
You’re now an escapee,
So you can live your life,
To the highest degree,
Without all the clouds,
Clearly you see,
It looks a whole lot better,
I hope you agree,
This is now the life,
You wanted it to be,
Going in at 100 miles per hour,
Like you’re in a Grand Prix!
